The Most Common Causes of Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain is discomfort in the area between your chest and pelvis; it is a common problem with many potential causes. The most common causes of abdominal or stomach pain, such as indigestion and gas, are usually not serious. In most cases of mild abdominal pain, symptoms often resolve quickly on their own or with basic treatment. However, sudden, severe, or chronic abdominal pain requires prompt treatment since it can indicate a more serious underlying condition such as cancer or organ failure. Gastroenteritis or stomach flu

Bacteria or viruses cause most cases of stomach flu. In such cases, besides abdominal pain, you may experience nausea, vomiting, and loose stool. These symptoms usually occur sooner or more frequently after eating and often resolve within a few days. However, sometimes symptoms may last longer than two days; this may signify serious health issues, such as infection or inflammatory bowel disease.

Irritable bowel syndrome

For unknown reasons, patients with irritable bowel syndrome can’t digest certain foods. The classic symptom of irritable bowel syndrome is abdominal pain which is often relieved after a bowel movement. Apart from abdominal pain, an individual may have nausea, gas, bloating, and cramping.

Stomach ulcers

Ulcers are wounds that do not heal; they tend to cause severe and long-lasting stomach pain. They can also lead to indigestion, bloating, and weight loss. The bacteria H. pylori and the long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications mostly cause stomach ulcers.

Vomiting

When you vomit, stomach acid travels backward through the digestive tract, irritating tissues along the way; this may result in stomach pain. Additionally, the physical act of vomiting causes your abdominal muscles to become sore. Various factors can trigger vomiting, ranging from food poisoning to intestinal blockage.

Constipation

Constipation occurs when too much waste collects in the bowel, increasing the pressure on the colon and causing pain. The most common cause of constipation is too little fiber or fluid in the diet. Other causes of constipation include low levels of physical activity and the use of certain medications.

Sometimes constipation can be a sign of a blockage in the intestine or a neurological disorder. It is vital to see your doctor if constipation persists.

Gas

Increased gas pressure in your abdomen occurs when the small intestines break down food your body finds intolerant. The gas causes sharp pain, tightness or restriction in the stomach, and belching.

Food intolerance

When your body can’t digest certain food materials, they are broken down by the stomach and intestinal bacteria, causing gas. The more undigested material you have, the more gas is produced, causing pain and pressure. Other common symptoms you may experience after eating certain foods include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
